I took these images out at Harpers Ferry this evening in the pitch dark. There is not much for lighting in this small town near the intersection of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers.

I took a nice long drive west this evening in search of something new. Its really hard to find something new at night - you pretty much just drive looking for a beam of light. I wound up going all the way out to Catlett (about an hour) and then heading back. On the way I thought that it would be cool to shoot the square near a small group of shops not far from my house. I knew that there would be light there at least. :-)

This evening I took a chance and walked an older section of the battlefield that is currently under renovation. I had read a sign that pointed toward and old farm (the Brawner House), which in my mind I pictured the perfect image. Sunset, trees, fields and a nice old house or barn.

I parked on the east side of this field near the Groveton Cemetery off of Groveton road. The park service has this big project going on at the battle field to return the fields back to the state that they were in during the civil war. When this project is done, this section will be beautiful, but until then it is a kind of a waste land with many stumps and sticks and lots of mud. There is still a reasonable resemblance of a trail, which leads all the way to the other side of park and the new Brawner House.

The new building is a modernized version of a farm house. It is probably intended to be more of a visitors center then a copy of the original buildings. There are remnants of the original buildings but they are overgrown and not on display for the public. (These could be old out buildings, its hard to tell.) I had a great time exploring this new area and will definitely return in the spring (especially now that I know there is a parking area about 100 feet away on the other side of the park).

The afternoon was beautiful and the birds are really starting to sing. I saw a pair of hawks that darted overhead and in the distance a pair of deer were grazing in the field. The walk back to the car was excellent and considering I left my head lamp in the car I was very happy to make it back with out breaking a leg. Overall I am very happy with the afternoon and grateful for another wonderful day. Looking forward to the next photo. I can't wait to get back out there! Cheers.

This evenings image was taken while I was scouting some new ground after a wonderful afternoon frolicking with the deer. The sun was already below the horizon and well into civil twilight. I think this will make a good location for images taken in the sweet light just before the sunset. A great background of dark puffy clouds behind the house will top this off nicely. I will be back when the time is right. There are so many amazing places out in these fields and I feel like I could just wonder around for hours and be content without making a single frame.

It is about a 20 minute hike over to the middle of this field where there are always deer grazing. There is a nice old house up on the hill and a thick cluster of grass and trees along its border. As I walked across the field this afternoon there were several groups of deer. The first group was along the right tree line just as you exit the woods and approach the open field. They watched me closely but because of the direction I was walking (and I flashed them the peace sign) they were not bothered and continued to graze. When I reached the other side of the field I walked up on a second group. This time the peace sign did not work and they decided to bound off and move further up the hill. I noticed the light was looking very nice and decided to shoot the field with the house as a background. At this point the deer were up along the tree line and were OK with my presence for the moment. (A few minutes later they all decided to cross the road and flow out on to the open field like a herd of cattle. There must have been close to 100 of them (probably an exaggeration but it sure looked crowded.)

How very thankful I am for this fine afternoon and a chance to get out into nature and be among such wonderful creatures. Some times I feel selfish to be outside all alone while others miss out on this beauty. If people could just stop and look around them I believe they would see what an amazing place this world really is and they would be able to appreciate how much nature has to offer for free. Cheers.
